About the whole "it's too black and white and when you develop politically, you don't like it" Tbh, that seems like many leftist people seem to have, imo. To explain this: I like my brain to sit down after the whole complicated real life shit. And like fast food, sometimes you take in some simple stuff. One shouldn't do this too often and one should be aware that it's not airways the healthiest. But sometimes, it feels ok and helps to calm down when life is hard. I don't understand how so many people fail to understand the argument of the movie of JD Vance's life, Hillbilly Elegy. The entire movie is about how JD Vance's mother was genetically a genius, intellectually superior, and how JD Vance himself inherited her mother's superior genetics, and how even he, with his superior genetics, had to work 60 different jobs, all the while studying at Yale Law School for Fascists, to get himself out of generational poverty. So if you are born genetically superior, and there is only a 1% chance that you will be born with genius genetics, and then you also work 60 different jobs, and then you get accepted into Yale Law School... If JD Vance can do it. You can do it. All it takes, is just a little bit of work and dedication from you. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and make something of yourself. Basically, Hillbilly Elegy accidentally demonstrates why JD Vance is a moron who doesn't understands anything, or why JD Vance is a racist bad faith actor who understands everything.

I won't lie... It's never heard of LotR until the film's. I remember watching the first one and being upset when it ended because it felt like I'd already gone through so much with characters and I wasn't going to get the closure/happy ending then. But when I watched it again, I noticed it was an all white cast, which seemed strange. Then I looked it up and apparently there was one black actor playing one of the creatures. You can't tell me that with a cast that big, you couldn't find one 'minority' to play a main role. That's a deliberate choice and it's really taken the shine off those films for me.

Tolkien read Dune - as in the first novel of the series. It's unknown if he read any other books in the series, but it's known for a fact that he read the first one, and really did not like it. He was sent the first novel by someone and letters Tolkien wrote have been released to the public, and Tolkien wrote back that he had read it, didn't really go in to specifics about what he didn't like. The morality of the story of the lord of the rings is indeed more black and white than nuanced. But as literature the books are indeed a masterpiece and incompatable to most of fantasy. The prose alone is majestic. And maybe the films are not the best films ever, but they are for sure one of the best film adaptations of legato ever made.

I was 10 when Fellowship hit theatres. Lotr is very nostalgic to me, and i still enjoy it immensely. However, the fascist/manichean worldview is infantile. I’m fairly liberal but the reason why so many on the right love lotr is because it’s one of the few movies their parents allowed them to watch a ton growing up, and let’s face it, it’s one of the best movies/trilogies that’s ever been made. Those two factors formed a super deep attachment for them (also speaking for myself even though I’m not conservative anymore). It’s in our bones and it’s good. Now I think loads of them have a retarded belief that Christian values or whatever bs is what made those movies good when really it’s the sets/sequences/world/soundtrack etc but ALSO my man you are way off calling LOTR’s morality simplistic or like childish or whatever. Just because there are clear moral lines doesn’t make something simplistic. AND as a dune lover myself, and I love the moral nuance in those, they’re still just not as good of stories and don’t have as many lovable characters as LOTR. I think it's one thing to grow out of the edgy phase because people just get tired of it and move on....but MrBeast tries too damn hard to be 'safe' to the point it comes off as both laughable and patronizing. I know this is going to be the weirdest comparison but... MrBeast is just another Ryan's World but as an adult. It's manufactured content FOR RUclips vs being content ON RUclips if that makes sense. Also, why does he need a show? Most RUclips to traditional media projects fail because they actually cap what can be done independently of the creator and they have to follow the rules of the network or company, even with a higher budget. I would imagine there would be some friction between Gondor and Rohan as although they might initially be receptive to Gondor's Final Solution, given Rohirrim warrior culture they would likely descend into leading their own disorganized pogroms against the wicked and racially suspect Dunledin mountain men and any Urak Hai they might harbour. Naturally they would have a dim view of Gondor (who they saved at great cost on the Pelenor Fields) sticking it's nose in Edoras' business.

In high school (1968), my English teacher gave us extra credit for reading LOTR, which I took advantage of. My classmates and I learned the elvish language. We were huge fans of the whole thing. And as a hippie, Tom Bombadil was my favorite character. (Sadly, Jackson left that character out of his movies.) It was a battle of good over evil. Gollum was a particularly interesting character study of just how badly power can corrupt an individual, particularly a weak one like Smeagol. Sauron represented all the awful authoritarians who seek to throw the world into darkness, which, as a Democrat at the time, I took to represent many a Republican (still do). Thus, I confess to being surprised that these particular Republicans like it. Is it because they aspire to be the next Sauron? What am I missing?

I have always loved lotr because of the themes of comradery and solidarity in the worst of times and the inherent weakness of men towards the corrupting influence of power in the ring. I also see a lot of what I love in my home country in Latin America in the humility of the hobbits and the reverence with which the narrative treats nature. I always thought it was pretty deep in how it treats its characters, especially ones like Gollum. It’s so bizarre to me to see how these right wing morons take this thing and try appropriate it into something that validates their disgusting whitesupremacist worldview. I think Tolkien managed to touch on some things that were beyond what he could imagine that make the story appealing despite his conservatism. These right wingers really love to latch on to the most superficial elements of media that roughly correlate to what they like and ignore everything else and to me that really says something about how shallow their understanding of anything in the world around them is

Nice video! Speaking as a LOTR and Dune fan, I feel it’s possible to enjoy aspects of each. I’m trying to put it simply so I’ll try to put it in comic terms, it’s like comparing Superman to Dr. Manhattan. Both are interesting characters with two view points with something interesting to say. It’s sad that the far right weaponized LOTR because I feel that it’s an amazing story of perseverance and hope. Both the books and the movies show some of the best forms of non-toxic masculinity in media. Have you read The Silmarillion by any chance? I feel like you would enjoy it. It delves into more morally gray aspects of middle earth that I’d feel you would enjoy. The tale of Maeglin and the fall of Gondolin comes to mind. It’s not like Duncan politically positioning himself around a God Emperor sandworm, but I feel it’s a good story nonetheless.
